BAILIÚ

ART FOR COMMUNITY

We create and curate art for our communities.

We create and curate artworks rooted in acts of care. We reflect and learn from from our curations, while centering artist stories.

Bailiú is Irish. It means to flock together, gather, or collect. This community name is inspired by the way birds like starlings move together in unison. It was inspired by the book Emergent Strategy, by adrienne maree brown who shares this insight from nature (p.46):

The synchronized movement patterns of a starling flock is also called a murmuration. Guided by simple rules, starling murmurations can react to their environment as a group without a central leader orchestrating their choices; in any instant, any part of the flock can transform the movement of the whole flock. Collective leadership [and] partnership. Adaptability.

  • We explore the question of which actions we take right now to support ourselves and each other

We reflect on such actions together through art

  • On the first of each month, we share a newsletter which includes an action for care, artworks, and our insights

We share our reflections on the artwork, artist stories, and further resources to dive deeper into the topic

  • We believe that reflecting on acts of care together through artist stories is a step towards strengthening our communities.

About the Founder

Nura Saleh founded Bailiú with some friends as a way to explore the lessons about humanity that are embedded within creative works of art. We were inspired by artists as curators of creativity, care, and community support. This project is a part of our larger mission to research participatory design in community building, and explore human-centered approaches to our shared spaces.

Nura is based in Tucson, Arizona and when she is not immersing herself in art, she is working on researching ethical Artificial Intelligence to educate and empower communities. The words we write for this project are being used to train Zaira, our AI agent that will be rooted in care and designed to help connect communities. No artwork or written submissions will be used in this training without permission.

This project is supported by The Origin Lab, a collective dedicated to making it easier to do good.
