AI & Dreaming

Art of Toni Morrison: Steffi Walthall

Writing: Nura Saleh, Founder

I feel strongly that AI should never be involved in our dreaming. We need to set our own directions for our future.

AI is built off of our documented past. While I know there’s so much wisdom there, it is also such a specific part. As they say, history is written by the victors. And I think life isn’t just about winning. Life is about the values that we hold. Sometimes holding onto our values means that we lose a battle, or a war. But honestly, I’d rather live right in a way that’s aligned with my values and dreams. I also think it’s important to note that the parts of ourselves that we share with the internet, are a very specific part.

Over the last few decades I’ve seen the online world get uglier and uglier. People get too comfortable bullying others and sharing their darkest thoughts. There’s the anonymity of it that lets people release those hidden parts of themselves sometimes. And then on the other hand, there are so many that share the superficial joy. It’s the vulnerable part of us that we keep buried that are least represented. Our hidden hopes, and dreams. The way we think and process the world. Those are the often the words we keep to ourselves. These parts of humanity, the love and the embodied experience of community, is less represented in AI. The history of those who held onto their values instead of waging war - those aren’t in AI. That’s what we need to bring to the table.

If we lean on AI too much in our brainstorming, we will just end up making the same mistakes from the past.

We need to be sure we’re setting our own direction. Know where you want to go before you ask AI how to get there.

Remember Toni Morrison’s words: “Dream before you think”.
